Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe and Kyra Skaggs
Kyra Skaggs recently served as a Washington State Senate Page. She was sponsored by Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe, D-Bothell. Skaggs, 14, attends Kenmore Junior High School in Kenmore and participates in orchestra and the Center and Kaleidoscope Dance Company. She also enjoys singing.
“Meeting new people from all over Washington was my favorite part,” said Kyra of her week as a page, “I made good friends.” When Kyra came to Olympia, she didn’t know what to expect of page work. “I knew I would be delivering things, but I didn’t know that much about it,” said Kyra.
During her week in Olympia, part of Skaggs’s school work was writing a bill and presenting that bill to her fellow pages in a mock committee exercise. Kyra’s bill made mass transit more eco-friendly by switching to hybrid busses and adding new routes, “so that transit is more beneficial to more people.” Her bill was passed out of committee by unanimous vote.
