Jeffry (“Jeff”) Davie Merrill died unexpectedly on September 20, 2016, at the age of 68.
Jeff was born on August 9, 1948, in Eugene, Ore., to John and Betty Merrill. He was older brother to Andi and graduated from West Covina High School in California in 1966. After his service with the Army Reserves, in 1979 Jeff relocated to Washington state, where he met Denise Arrowwood, a local kindergarten teacher. In 1981, Jeff and Denise married, and the couple had two children, Jonathan (1985) and Ashley (1987).
Jeff worked hard at his career in real estate, and in 2006 switched career paths to work as a special needs bus driver. He enjoyed his retirement from 2013 until his passing by traveling the western U.S. with his trailer, visiting family.
Jeff would always rather give a hug over a handshake. He enjoyed everything from race cars to Indian Guide roller derbies, preparing elaborate meals for those he loved to befriending a stranger at a taco stand. Those who loved him will remember Jeff wearing shorts, flip flops, and a Jimmy Buffet parrot-head hat — at the beach, on a boat, in the yard, enjoying the simple pleasures of life in with those he loved. His bright spirit and open heart will be missed by all who knew him.
Jeff is survived by his mother, Betty; son, Jonathan; daughter, Ashley; son-in-law, Sam; sister, Andi; brother-in-law, Bill; and two young granddaughters, Claire and Brooke. He is preceded in death by his father, John Merrill, and nephew, Quinton Watson. A small memorial will be held for family and close friends in California. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Jeff’s honor be made to The Solution, attn: Joseph Maes, 4210 N Longview Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85014 or by calling 602-264-2840.
