2017 Kia Niro Touring

  • Written by Julie Boselly
It’s always exciting to drive a new car you haven’t experienced before. At first glance, the Niro looks pretty similar to most other small SUVs. It’s not the most stunning interior, but it is comfortable, and quickly grew on me. 2017 is the Niro’s first year on the market.

The Niro is a hybrid with a 1.6L 4-cylinder engine and 43 hp electric motor. What it lacks in speed, it makes up for in gas expenses and tech features. The touring model boasts a hefty MPG at City/Highway/Combined 46/40/43. For a week of commuting, I spent a whopping $8. I don’t have a long commute to begin with, but you quickly learn to drive with peak battery performance.

Consumer Reports compares hybrids and claims the Niro “falls 9 mpg shy of the fuel-economy champs, the Toyota Prius and the Ioniq, because of its extra weight and height.”

I found the Niro to feel more stylish than those models which could be the determining factor in final purchase.

Price as tested: $32,840
Base Model, FE, starting MSRP: $23,240
Per Kia, the Niro is “Highest Ranked Small SUV in Initial Quality” in J.D. Power’s 2017 Initial Quality Study (IQS).
