This season, Molbak’s has a sleigh full of ideas to help you celebrate and decorate, featuring festive poinsettias – the cool Yule bloomer. As friends and family gather, celebrate by filling your home with joy and wonder and show off your creativity as well.
Color — classic to contemporary
A beloved holiday essential, poinsettias are adored for their vibrant, long-lasting beauty that complements any décor. Every year Molbak’s presents new varieties in a cheerful spectrum of colors and “petal” styles that go beyond traditional red, pink and white.
Starting with bold, vibrant reds that would make even Santa blush, poinsettias light up the room in shades from deep burgundy like “Christmas Feelings Merlot,” to traditional crimson “Christmas Day,” to a blazing orange-red “Cortez Electric Fire.” New hybrids “Luv U Pink” and “Princettia Dark Pink” combine hot-pink color for a candy-colored confection that will sweeten any spot.
Or try a modern look with poinsettias that twinkle with contrasting colors. “Sonora White Glitter” with cherry red bracts and white sprinkles and “Christmas Beauty Nostalgia” in shades of pink, cream and green are merry must-haves that are sure to delight.
The best thing about poinsettias is that all you need to do is pop them in a decorative pot and viola – you have a seasonal sensation! Place petite white “Polar Bear” poinsettias in tiny decorative containers to use as place settings, add a luminous glow to the top of a mantle or line the center of the table as a festive centerpiece. One hanging poinsettia can dress up an entire room, on a plant stand or in the center of a buffet table. And, add a little sparkle with everlasting glittering twigs or sprays of cedar, or dress up the soil with clusters of colorful ornaments.
Break out of the pot
This season, take your poinsettias to a new level: use them as cut flowers!
Gather rubber gloves, scissors and a lit candle. When cut or damaged, poinsettias exude a milky sap that can be mildly irritating to the skin, so wear a pair of rubber gloves when working with them. Using scissors, cut the “blossom” with a generous amount of stem. Next, gently sear the end of the stem using the flame, and any place you have removed a leaf (it will bubble a little.) This seals the sap in the stem and keeps your “flower” from wilting. Place in water with some added floral preservative, saturated floral foam or a filled floral tube. Poinsettias draw a lot of water, so be sure to water often.
Now the decorating possibilities are endless! Create a festive floral arrangement accented with pink pepper berries and eucalyptus. Give pizzazz to your indoor wreaths, garlands and topiaries with a splash of sizzling poinsettias. Just insert them in floral tubes and slip them amongst the foliage. Or place them in a clear vase, filled with colorful cranberries.
Celebrate the season in style! Molbak’s is the perfect place to find plants, ornaments and everything holiday to deck your halls!
