The Woodinville Insider: The Flip Side of Winemaking

  • Written by Woodinville Wine Country

When Darren Des Voigne opened Woodinville’s Des Voigne Cellars a decade ago, he had more than wine on his mind. Like many boutique winemakers, Des Voigne also had a growing love for craft beer. Why not create great wines and beer under one roof? Now, state laws have finally allowed him to fulfill his vision. In keeping with the jazz theme of his winery, Des Voigne recently opened B Side Brewing, a delicious microbrewery that lives and breathes side-by-side with his acclaimed winery. A trip to Des Voigne will leave any visitor wondering why no one has paired the production of these two before.

Located in the Artisan Hills region just south of North Woodinville Way and the Warehouse Wine District, Des Voigne Cellars features an inspired mix of Merlot, Syrah, Sangiovese, Zinfandel, and red and white blend releases — all adorned with the look and atmosphere of a swinging jazz club. For most wineries, this generous selection would be more than enough, but flip to the other side of Des Voigne’s tasting room and a completely different menu of tastes presents itself in the form of B Side Brewing.

With the launch of B Side, Des Voigne becomes Woodinville’s (and perhaps Washington’s) first full production brewery and winery combination under a single roof. B Side taps currently serve up an IPA, porter and a delicious pale ale, but these will soon be joined by a new amber ale and a Russian stout that are still finishing in the tank. Enjoy a few pints in the tasting room, or grab a growler or keg to take home.

As Woodinville’s microbrew community continues to explode, visitors to wine country are faced with a deliciously difficult decision: Beer or wine? Des Voigne Cellars makes the choice easy by offering the best of both beverage worlds in one facility with one philosophy: Whether it’s drinks or jazz, great hits can come from both sides of the record.
