On Sept. 7 the CXC squad competed at our first meet of the season, commonly called the Conference Preview. This year, the race was held at River Meadows Park which is halfway between Granite Falls and Arlington. If you think that is in the middle of nowhere, you are probably not far off.
The girls were up first. When it was done, we were “double winners.” Madi Shinn was the individual winner and the girls squad finished first in the team score. We were strong up front as well as showing strength with our depth. We put five girls in the top 10 and put four more in the next 10.
Besides Madi, our scoring five were Alicia Krivanek (3rd), Lily Krueger (4th), Kate Vergillo (8th) and Mary Cate Babcock (9th).
The boys ran last. Similar to the girls race, we were “double winners.” Grant Van Valkenburg was the individual winner and the boys squad finished first in the team race. The boys also showed numbers up front and lots of depth. Our whole top seven finished in the top 11 of the race.
Considering there were six other schools there, that is a strong performance.
For many of our runners, our rookies, it was their first high school cross country meet. Maybe even their first meet ever.
It was a good starting point for them. It was good to hear many of them comment that they could have ran faster.
For those who didn’t know, there is one major change to the conference as Lakewood HS has moved from the Cascade Conference to the Northwest Conference.
In XC, Lakewood has been a traditional power. So it will weaken the league overall. But we will have to continue to work hard to make sure that we don’t take anything for granted.
