Seattle’s plastic straws, utensils ban launches July 1

  • Written by Woodinville Weekly Staff
Starting July 1, petroleum-based plastic straws, utensils, and cocktail picks will be banned at all Seattle businesses that sell food or drinks.
Seattle is believed to be the first major U.S. city to enact such a ban — part of the City’s continued effort to reduce waste and prevent petroleum-based plastics from contaminating compost and polluting the marine environment.
Plastic utensils and straws are not recyclable. Because there are now multiple manufacturers of approved compostable utensils and straws, plastic food service items will be prohibited in Seattle effective July 1, 2018. Banned utensils include disposable plastic forks, plastic spoons, plastic knives, and plastic cocktail picks. Businesses are invited to email SPU, at  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
