Youth will be served as Falcons edge Juanita

The Woodinville girls’ tennis team won their second straight match last Thursday, with a 4-3 win over Juanita at Woodinville High School.

The Falcons (2-0) are off to a banner start this season. This despite having 11 freshmen who populate their 23 player roster.

Buhrmann defeated Angela Lothian 6-2, 7-5. At just fourteen years of age, Buhrmann has been playing for eight years.

“Being a freshman as the #1 is a little nerve wracking,” she said. “But being #1, you’re always playing the best player on the other team.”

When asked what part of her game she’s working on, she smiled.

“Being very calm is a big thing,” Buhrmann said. “Controlling my anger. Because I sometimes get angry on the court. I play in tournaments all the time, and anger is one of the big things I [struggle] with.”

Wang has lived an interesting life which has spanned the globe. She was born in Boston, lived in China for six years, before finally moving to Woodinville in 2014. She’s been playing tennis for six years.

“When you’re playing other freshmen, it’s not too bad,” Wang said. “But when you’re playing against someone who is a senior or a junior, you get nervous. It gets better after awhile though. I’m enjoying myself.”

Buhrmann was asked if anything has surprised her about high school tennis.

“I came in thinking that these girls aren’t going to be on the circuit,” Buhrmann said. “I was just ready for a level of tennis I’m not used to. But all these girls are really good. And I didn’t think it would be as much fun as it has been. The team is so great, everyone is so nice.”

The Lady Falcons host traditional powerhouse Newport this Tuesday, before traveling to play Bothell on Thursday.
