Cascade Conference  Cross-Country Championships

  • Written by Bruce McDowell

Last Thursday, Cedarcrest XC hosted the Cascade Conference Cross-Country Championships.  The meet was scheduled to be at Blue Heron G.C. but due to flood waters was changed to Tolt Middle School with very short notice.

The girls ran first.  We knew that it was going to be a close battle with King’s but had a hope that our depth would help us in the end.  The girls ran super and were able to come away with the title by 11 points over King’s.  It had been a goal for the girls to win the title since the start of the season.  Some of that was for the historical significance that this title would make 10 straight years.

Here's how the girls placed:

Elsie Dombek (2nd), Kelly Hall (4th) and Alicia Krivanek (7th) were named to the All-Cascade Conference First Team.  Kate Vergillo (8th), Mary Cate Babcock (11th) and Aryia Farnworth (14th) were named to the All-Cascade Conference Second Team.

The boys race was a little more clear cut as we were the favorite going into the race.  The boys didn’t disappoint by having less than half the points of the second place King’s squad.  The boys don’t have a streak like the girls but it is still an impressive six titles in the past eight years.  We placed seven boys in the top 14:  Grant Van Valkenburg (2nd), Ben Benson (3rd) and Emmett Klaiber (6th) were named to the All-Cascade Conference First Team.  Bryce Hefner (10th), Ryan LaTurner (12th), Justin Young (13th) and Brady Shaw (14th) were named to the All-Cascade Conference Second Team.

All of the athletes did terrific this season.  For many it was their last race.  Nine of our top runners of each gender will continue onto the District finals and then hopefully state.  Full results can be found at https://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/Results/Meet.aspx?Meet=132432#/394

A separate thanks to the administration and maintenance/custodians for the Riverview School District and Tolt Middle School for being so flexible with accommodating our program and our request for a site change on a mere three hours notice.
