The Lady Red Wolves were one of the hottest teams in the conference having won 11 of their last 13 games. But Cedarcrest found the going tough against a top-rated Lady Scot squad and dropped a low scoring 32-22 contest last Friday night to fall to 7-6 in the Wesco Conference.
“It was probably the best defensive effort we put forth this season. Shorecrest is 17-1 and ranked 4th in state 3A RPI and we held them to 32 points,” Coach Brad Knowles said. “We were down 18-17 going into the 4th quarter, but they hit a few shots and we turned the ball over a couple of times.”
The Scots jumped up top 9-4 at the end of the first quarter and held a 12-7 lead at the break. Cedarcrest closed the gap to 18-17 on the strength of an 11-8 third-quarter run and gave the home crowd hopes of an upset.
But the Lady Red Wolves went cold over the final eight minutes of the contest and dropped the game by 10 points.
“Our game plan was to switch defenses based on their key players and our team did it very well, we just couldn’t get our shots to drop in the second half and get the lead,” Knowles said. “But overall, it was a great game for us and shows that we can play with any team going into the playoffs next week.”
Cedarcrest finished out regular season play against Edmonds-Woodway Monday night, but the result of the game was not available before the paper went to press. The first round of the District Tournament got underway Wednesday.
