Cedarcrest cross country runners do well at State

  • Written by Bruce McDowell, Coach

Saturday, the CXC squad competed at the WIAA State Championship meet. The meet was held at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco where it has been held for 20+ years. Besides the fact that it is the state meet, it is a big day of racing as all five classification races are held for both genders. For those who don’t pay attention to such things, Cedarcrest is a 2A school which is the middle classification for this meet.

Today [Saturday, October 29] the CXC squad competed at the Northwest District 1 Championships held at South Whidbey H.S.  It is always easy and fun to write meet reports when the races went well and we met our goals.  Writing these reports when we didn’t accomplish everything we had hoped for is not as easy.  First off the weather and course report.  For those not in the area on Saturday, it pretty much rained for most of Saturday morning.  That brought lots of mud and wet ground.  Eventually the sun came out but by then the damage was done.  Even dry, this course isn’t the easiest or fastest course around.  Of course, since districts is the state qualifying meet, the meet is all about placing well.  For both the boys and girls races, it would be top 3 teams and top 21 individuals.

Thursday, Oct. 6, the CXC squad competed at a Cascade Conference meet at South Whidbey H.S.

This course is the same course that we will run in 3 weeks for the District Championship meet. So, it was a good opportunity to preview the course for our District squad. Some of our top runners went out a little conservative for the first mile but after that it was game on. Even with that restriction, almost all of our district returners from last year ran about the same time today that they did at last year’s district meet.  In other words, we ran super!

On Saturday, September 17, the CXC squad competed in the Apple Ridge Invite.

The meet is held in the area surrounding an apple orchard, west of Yakima.  This meet (like all of our Saturday races) is not a typical XC meet. There are three race courses (all 3.0 miles) which are in varying degree of difficulty (easy, medium and hard). Coaches place runners in one of the three races while planning that for team score purposes, the top two runners in each race contribute to the overall team score. For that reason, we split up our top runners so we have a few of them in each of the three races.
