Lady Falcons soar to 4th consecutive District 1/2 championship

The Woodinville Lady Falcons basketball team is good. How good? Just ask the dozens of teams Woodinville has defeated on their way to a 24-1 record, a KingCo. Championship and their fourth consecutive District 1/2 4A Girls Basketball Championship, following their 55-43 win over rival Eastlake on Feb. 17.

The next stop is the WIAA 4A Girls State Basketball and an opening round 6 p.m. tip-off against Emerald Ridge High School on Feb. 25 at Lake Washington High School. Falcons – bring your green.

Woodinville 55, Eastlake 43 | Feb. 17

The Falcons traveled to Everett Community College for a Friday night battle against the Eagles for the District 1/ 2 Girls Basketball. Woodinville defeated Eastlake 58-54 on Jan. 11 in their first matchup. In their second, Woodinville would not be denied.

At the end of one, Woodinville held a 1-point lead, 10-9. In the second quarter, the Falcons dropped 18 on the Eagles, while holding them to 11 points. At the half, Woodinville led 28-20.

As the third quarter opened, the momentum shifted Eastlake’s way. The Eagles held Woodinville to 10 third-quarter points while scoring 16 and cutting the Falcon’s lead to 38-36.

Thankfully, Woodinville is a fourth-quarter team and they got busy, scoring 17 fourth-quarter points while holding Eastlake to seven. When the buzzer sounded, Woodinville escaped with a 55-43 win and their fourth WIAA District 1/2 4A Girls Basketball Championship.

Junior Layla Kahrimanovic led the Falcons with 16 points. She added seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Her 14.2 points per game average is third on the team.

Senior Brooke Beresford played a solid offensive game and shined on the defensive end, holding Eastlake senior Ava Schmidt to 12 points and a scoreless fourth quarter. Beresford scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds. She added a team-high five assists, three steals, and two blocked shots. She is second on the team with an average 14.6 points per game.

Junior Jaecy Eggers grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. Her three points were a season low, but her 14.8 points per game average is still tops on the team.

Woodinville has three players averaging over 14 points per game. All three are ranked in the top 20 for all-time Woodinville season scorers.

Eggers and Beresford are ranked in the top 10 all-time Lady Falcon rebounders. Eggers sits at fourth. Beresford is seventh.

Freshman Jazlyn Wilkerson scored 10 points. Adie Segadelli scored six. Senior Anna Harris scored five.

In the opening round of the WIAA 4A Girls Basketball Tournament, Woodinville will face Emerald Ridge, Puyallup. The Jaguars finished the season with an overall record of 15-5.

As the No. 1 seed, Woodinville will play again on March 1 or March 2 at the Tacoma Dome.
