Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, has secured a $2 million contract from the U.S. government to modernize the Department of Defense (DoD) with its chatbot, Grok. This initiative, dubbed “Grok for Government,” positions xAI among other major tech companies like Google and OpenAI that are assisting the Trump administration in AI adoption.
The contract grants the DoD access to Grok 4, the chatbot’s latest version, along with custom tools tailored for national security use and technical support for classified environments. Beyond the DoD, other federal agencies will also be able to procure xAI tools, and xAI plans to develop custom models and applications for healthcare and science sectors.
This development comes shortly after Grok 4 faced significant controversy due to antisemitic comments and posts on Musk’s social media platform, X. Musk attributed these issues to the chatbot being “too eager to please,” a problem xAI is actively working to rectify.
